LOVE IS STRANGE - A New Film Report
How woeful it is when a film that is striving to show a new tolerance in civil society ratchets downwards into a feeble film where few triumph. Let me tell you about it and how I found it: Two gay partners- having lived with each other for thirty-nine years-- decide to wed-- thanks to new law permitting it-- and look ahead to the remainder of their lives in romantic matrimony. (Why a guy seventy-one and a guy ten years his junior do this... bless them!) But soon after the day's event becomes public, the Catholic Archdiocese --for whom the younger man works as music teacher-- sends down word to the head priest of the church-- where he's taught for years-- that he is now "fired". ...

THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY - A New Film Report
Do you think you could believe that life's entirely made up of coincidences? Well, there's something to consider: THE HUNDRED FOOT JOURNEY-a film I really liked- is a drama with comedy that could make you buy it. The film starts off with a loving mother showing her son the arcane subtleties of Indian cooking. He is quite young and talented. She hands him examples to taste as well as smell, and gives him a well-worn suitcase with compartments that hold the exotic spices. ...

"The November Man" Brings Pierce Brosnan Back Into the Spy Fold
Many films are based on the premise of a man who is peacefully in retirement being coaxed out of his retirement for one last job, con or gig. In this way, "The November Man" isn't very original in its plot. What is original and quite thrilling, however, is its use of a plot that mirrors something that could happen in the volatile Eastern European political landscape of contemporary times. ...
Utopia - The Televised Miniseries - Part 3
In my last article about the television miniseries -- Utopia, I presented a true life and death struggle to achieve utopia. The lesson they learned was that communal living didn't work. ...

The Drop - Movie Review of Gritty Thriller
Tom Hardy stars as a lonely bartender in The Drop, which begins as a gritty crime drama surrounding illegal activities where he works, but becomes more mysterious through plot twists and character development. In my last article I said that I was going to give my take on the Utopia -- Television Miniseries. I also gave a brief overview of what I thought about the miniseries, and explained my background and perspective as a 73 year old retired engineer and futurist writer. My plan is to write a weekly overview of each episode, but I may stop doing this when it becomes clear where this social experiment is going. ...
THE LAST OF ROBIN HOOD - A New Film Report
I'd read the bad reviews, yet still felt curious- not just to see Kevin Kline play the renowned Errol Flynn but also to see how a big "no-no" in Hollywood in the nineteen-fifties might play for us today. I am moved to write: I thought the film was very well done. Mind you, the story is a bit sordid... but life does not always have to follow our preconceived notions of how such a relationship could only end up in the worst of all failures. You see, this is the tale of a well-known lothario-- at forty-eight years old-- catching sight of a young woman -strolling innocently on a Hollywood lot on her way to rehearsal for a chorus part in a movie. ...

The airing of Lifetime's behind-the-scenes movie about Saved by the Bell is causing quite a stir from fans of the classic sitcom, and the details about the animosity among the actors have served to recall other TV sitcoms whose stars did not get along away from the set. While the scandals are entertaining to an extent, it is unfortunate that little attention is ever given to the shows on which the actors became lifelong friends. ...

The Trip to Italy - A New Film Report
I enjoyed this movie for a lot of reasons. First, it had a quite inviting concept: Two British guys in a Mini Cooper convertible set out on a road trip from the north of Italy (in Piedmonte), drive along the Italian Riviera -as they cover Liguria and Amalfi)-- and finish up on the Isle of Capri. As they tool along, we get to glimpse views that are stunning... We're talking about a coast line and a background that have been part of the living presence of Italians for thousands of years. That's one reason to visit this film. ...
