I usually take what movie critics say with a grain of salt, so to speak. Take for example, The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, is a hilarious movie pairing an uptight FBI special agent with a testy Boston cop. Their goal? To take down a ruthless drug lord. Here's the problem. Neither woman has ever had a partner -- or a friend for that matter. Neither likes the other, neither knows how to work with the other. It was a big screen version of the Odd Couple, so to speak, but it worked. ...

Hot Trends in Hollywood
Hollywood is one capriciously fascinating town. Sometimes one would take it for a giant movie production set, all with a complex plot and crazy cast. It could be a great movie on its own, or it could be a poorly scripted soap, but the hot trends in Hollywood seem to have an effect on everyone. Eaten Alive (1977) Movie Review
Eaten Alive is a 1977 low-budget horror film by Tobe Hooper. The Director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre film which came out before this film in 1974. Reality Shows You Should Watch Even If They Are Less Reality and More Fun
Just when you think that the Reality Show craze is waning, more come along that capture the imagination and interest of viewers. New entries include Race To The Scene hosted by Dolph Lundgren, The Hero hosted by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Beverly Hills Pawn featuring big bucks Pawn Master Yossi Dina. The only problem with Reality Shows is that not all of them are as real as they seem (in case you have not figured that out by now). Despite creative editing and even some obviously staged and scripted events, many of these TV programs garner big ratings and you might be surprised at which are the most popular. ...

The War on Death: "World War Z"
"World War Z" has what it takes to be one of the most exciting zombie movies to come out in years. Where the standard zombie film has blood and gore in place of characters and sometimes even plot, "World War Z" manages-for almost the first time since "28 Days Later"-to bring real excitement and adventure to the genre. Real suspense and authentic terror leap out from every corner of this film, and it's worth it to take a close look at the makings of the film, if only to encourage other filmmakers to follow the fine example that's finally been... ...

Girls: Season One
I'm in love with Girls! HBO's Girls is an addictively good show created and written by Lena Dunham, who also stars. I didn't know much about the show except that Lena was a multi-talented lady who had a program on HBO. I rented the first season and watched it nonstop. As soon as I returned the box set, I was haunted by the thought of wanting to watch it again. I waited a full weekend and on Monday morning, I became the proud owner of Girls: Season One on Blu-ray. It's a very real and relevant portrayal of life for a group of twenty-something ladies, each with her own perspective. There are some scandalous and in your face scenes, (so be advised that this is probably not a show that you would want youngsters watching) but there are also lighthearted and some genuinely tender moments. While I love every episode, these are some of my favorites: ...

Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn Share On-Screen and Off-Screen Chemistry
From the first time they costarred in a motion picture, it was clear to film viewers that Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn share an on-screen chemistry that can only be based on true friendship and not something cooked up in Hollywood. As a matter of fact, some have gone so far as to call Wilson's and Vaughn's relationship a "bromance." In their first film together, 2005's "Wedding Crashers," Wilson and Vaughn, 44 and 43 respectively, play friends who show up uninvited at weddings in hopes of picking up women who... ...

90S Movie Review: Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park hit theaters in 1993 which would have made me roughly 7 years old. I distinctly remember being super excited for this film and begging my parents to take me on opening night. My parents even seemed enthusiastic about watching it and who could blame them? Summer "popcorn" flicks of the early 90s always delivered the entertainment they promised. Even in the case of box office duds, the showmanship and production quality was still there. These films were always more than enough to satisfy the pre-teen action junkie in all of us. ...

Fight Club and the Evils of Consumerism
I wrote this essay for a college class in 2007, but I recently decided to pick it up again and take a look at it. The sentiment described within and the 1996 publication date of Fight Club made this all seem very "90s" to me. Counter culture was on the upswing and Chuck Palahniuk swooped in at the perfect time to grab a hold of the overwhelming apathy, cynicism, and nihilism that has become so ingrained in American culture since then. It seems appropriate to post the essay in its entirety and let you judge for yourself. Enjoy. ...
90s Movie Review: Scream
Folks who aren't fans of horror often cite the lack of believability in horror as their primary gripe. To me, the fake melodrama and idiotic decisions by the main character actually add to the attraction. However, it's a nice change of pace once in awhile to turn the tropes of slasher films on their heads and shake up the genre a bit. ...

Movie Review: "Now You See Me"
When the magic-based flick "Now You See Me" debuted this summer, it had to compete against a lot of strong films, many of which were part of established franchises. However, in spite of intense competition, this film, about an FBI agent who is trying to track a group of bank robbers, fared well. The key twist to the feature is that the bank robbers are actually magicians who pull off their robberies while performing their magic shows. ...

Reality Show Cry Babies
Why are there so many cry babies now on TV? By "cry babies", I don't mean tiny infants who, by nature, can be expected to break down and blubber at the slightest thing; I mean the ever-increasing amount of grown men and women who, so immaturely and ridiculously, burst into tears in all these reality shows. ...
Here, There, and Everywhere: A Discussion of Hollywood's Favorite Premiere Locations
In the great American institution known as Hollywood, there is perhaps no event so characteristic as the premiere. Premieres are sometimes referred to as special screenings, and they certainly are special events, as they tend to be known for searchlights, limousines, and big stars pouring across a red carpet to the sound of cheering crowds full of adoring fans, not to mention the cast party to follow. These events have always been rare in relation to the large number of movies that are released every year, but what they lack in frequency they more than make up for in size... ...

On "Tuck Everlasting": An Existentialist Review
"Tuck Everlasting" is a film that illustrates the difference between "being" and "existing". "Being" is the act of being present though not necessarily capable of reaching out or relating to other objects, while "existing" means the ability to be in touch with the world or to respond and establish relations with other people or objects. "Tuck Everlasting" illustrated the two concepts in the film, first, for the concept of "being", Winifred and the Tucks were primarily not in touch with the world. Winifred was a recluse, living in an overprotected household. She had no friends at all to share her life with, just her parents and their staff, being a privileged family. ...

Animal Planet Mermaids Documentary Draws Record Number of Viewers
'Oh sweet sirens of the sea, how much the world does long for Ye'. While Animal Planet managed to achieve a record number of viewers for their most recent Mermaid documentary, there's definitely a tongue in cheek attitude behind the project that deserves at least a degree of appreciation for pulling the whole stunt off. As much as the 3.6 million viewers who tuned into the documentary may have been hoping to get a good check out of Wanda's fins, the fact is that the project was little more than a publicity stunt that has, weirdly, actually worked. Following up from last years Mermaid: Body Found, this episode promised not just startling new footage but also the support of respected marine biologists in the production of the show. This was enough to get the viewers interested, at least in a core demographic - it is estimated that half of the shows viewers were part of the influential 25-54 year old group (who tend to decide what goes on the tv). ...
